{"id":548,"date":"2009-12-14T00:58:31","date_gmt":"2009-12-14T04:58:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wizardwalk.com\/newblather\/?p=548"},"modified":"2009-12-14T01:07:47","modified_gmt":"2009-12-14T05:07:47","slug":"maillardets-automaton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/wizardwalk.com\/newblather\/?p=548","title":{"rendered":"Maillardet&#8217;s Automaton"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was hoping to finish reading the book\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0765360918?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=wizardwalk-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0765360918\">Lamentation<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=wizardwalk-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0765360918\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/> today (I&#8217;ve got about 60 pages to go) when certain family members insisted that I read a book called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0439813786?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=wizardwalk-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0439813786\">The Invention of Hugo Cabret<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=wizardwalk-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0439813786\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/>.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a pretty simple read since much of the book is pictures, and I finished it in a few hours.\u00a0 It was pretty captivating, full of mysteriousness that makes you want to keep reading.\u00a0 By the end of it, though, I didn&#8217;t think there were any grand-revealing truths or surprising twists as I was hoping for in the back of my mind, but it was still a fun read.<\/p>\n<p>What I found just as interesting (or even more interesting) than the book was a real mechanical automaton the book was somewhat inspired by: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fi.edu\/learn\/sci-tech\/automaton\/automaton.php?cts=instrumentation\">Maillardet&#8217;s Automaton<\/a>.\u00a0 It&#8217;s basically just a mechanical wind-up robot thing that draws pictures.\u00a0 Can you imagine how complex that thing must be?\u00a0 Pretty cool stuff.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a video of it drawing:<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"320\" height=\"265\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/jfeNC28vpYo&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;rel=0&amp;color1=0x3a3a3a&amp;color2=0x999999\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>Ooooo . . . aaaahhh . . .<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, my podcast <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecomposepile.com\/\">The Compose Pile<\/a> should now be appearing in the iTunes store.
