I based my build mostly on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.octopusrift.com\/building-the-rift-pc\/\">this guy&#8217;s recommendations<\/a>, with some small changes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The case<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wizardwalk.com\/newblather\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IMG_20150706_130559.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" style=\"display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; box-shadow: 3px 3px 7px #000; border-width: 0px;\" src=\"http:\/\/wizardwalk.com\/newblather\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IMG_20150706_130559-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20150706_130559\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I went with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000I5JHB0\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B000I5JHB0&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=wizardwalk-20&amp;linkId=EXWNWDACHRRHY55U\">Antec Nine Hundred<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=wizardwalk-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B000I5JHB0\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/>. It&#8217;s got plenty of fans for great cooling, nice blue LED lights, plenty of room for expansions (at least the sort I imagine I might make), and a window with which to peer into the PC&#8217;s guts. (Plus I got a great deal on it.) The USB 3.0 ports on the front are also a plus, as the Oculus Rift will require them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The motherboard<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wizardwalk.com\/newblather\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IMG_20150706_130513.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/wizardwalk.com\/newblather\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IMG_20150706_130513-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20150706_130513\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" style=\"display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; box-shadow: 3px 3px 7px #000; border-width: 0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I went with the recommended <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1ColT2y\">MSI ATX LGA 1150 PC Mate Z97<\/a>. I had no experience buying a motherboard before, but this seemed to have all the essentials. It&#8217;s got a nice fancy BIOS too.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The CPU<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wizardwalk.com\/newblather\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IMG_20150706_130532.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/wizardwalk.com\/newblather\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IMG_20150706_130532-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20150706_130532\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" style=\"display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; box-shadow: 3px 3px 7px #000; border-width: 0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I went ahead and spent a bit more and got the <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1LRedb4\">Intel i7 4790K processor<\/a>. Maybe diminishing returns compared with the i5, but I figure it may help with any future video and music editing. I&#8217;m just using the fan that came with it, so I&#8217;m probably not going to try overclocking it. Anyway, it seems fast enough as it is.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The GPU<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wizardwalk.com\/newblather\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IMG_20150706_130445.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/wizardwalk.com\/newblather\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IMG_20150706_130445-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20150706_130445\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" style=\"display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; box-shadow: 3px 3px 7px #000; border-width: 0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00NVODXR4\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=B00NVODXR4&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=wizardwalk-20&#038;linkId=S3RMSI3IP62MOQEC\">EVGA GeForce GTX 970 Super Clocked ACX 2.0 4GB GDDR5 Graphics Card<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=wizardwalk-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=B00NVODXR4\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/>. As of this post, it&#8217;s pretty much the latest second-tier GPU out there. I haven&#8217;t tested a lot of the modern games with it yet, but there are plenty of YouTube videos showing off what it can do. It&#8217;s pretty nice. I wanted a solid state drive&#8217;s faster loading times for the OS and the programs I use the most. But I&#8217;ve already used up half the drive with just the OS, Unity 5, and a few games. I&#8217;ll definitely get a higher capacity traditional hard drive as soon as I can. I went with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00H09BOXQ\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=B00H09BOXQ&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=wizardwalk-20&#038;linkId=UUA2DO565DPANHMQ\">Windows 7 Professional SP1 64bit<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=wizardwalk-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=B00H09BOXQ\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WiFi<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The motherboard didn&#8217;t come with WiFi, but fortunately I had an unused <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00762YNMG\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=B00762YNMG&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=wizardwalk-20&#038;linkId=DPNSK5T67243SB7K\">Panda Ultra Wireless N USB Adapter (150Mbps)<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=wizardwalk-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=B00762YNMG\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/>. It&#8217;s small, cheap, and seems to work fine for my purposes. I just had to download the latest drivers from their site to get Steam to work with it. (Which I reckon is the sort of thing you should do anyway with all your hardware when building a new PC.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Building the PC<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I had never built a PC before, but they design these components so morons can figure out how to put them together. OK, maybe not complete morons, but it&#8217;s pretty obvious where and how things fit together, and the manuals are always there with pretty pictures, and everything&#8217;s somewhere on the Internet. It&#8217;s easier than building furniture from IKEA. I guess you just have to hope you don&#8217;t have any defective parts.<\/p>\n<p>WARNING: Do not stick a 9 volt battery to random metallic parts for fun.
