I was on a train without a ceiling or walls, watching the vast beautiful landscapes pan by.\u00a0 Miraculously there was no wind.\u00a0 Sitting across from me was my good friend whom I had never met before.\u00a0 He invited me to play a card game to pass the time.<\/p>\n
Each card was about the size of an index card, 3 inches by 5 inches.\u00a0 The man had a stack of what seemed to be hundreds of them.\u00a0 They were brown, faded with age and use, yet did not in any way seem fragile.<\/p>\n
I already knew how to play.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t a game that you win or lose, it was just an activity game to help pass the time.\u00a0 On the front and back of each card was written some sort of suggestion, some sort of instruction on what to do, but they were simple things that you could do quickly and right away.\u00a0 For example, one said: \u201cIf you get a drink, your friend will probably want one too\u201d \u2013 telling me to go get two drinks.\u00a0 One said: \u201cThink about the ocean and smell the salty sea air.\u00a0 Draw a picture of it for your friend.\u201d\u00a0 Those are the only two I quite remember, but they were all sort of silly and stupid like that, and most included doing something \u201cnice\u201d for the other person.\u00a0 (I suppose it might make a good \u201cget-a-long\u201d game for kids?)<\/p>\n
Anyway, the game worked like this: you drew a card, read it, and then could either decide to do what was on it, or do what was on the back of the last card someone else drew (which was a mystery).\u00a0 Of course, they were all \u201cnice\u201d things.\u00a0 The cards never told you to do something embarrassing or cheesy or anything, like \u201csmell your feet\u201d or \u201cslap yourself\u201d or \u201csay a nice thing about your friend.\u201d<\/p>\n
So that\u2019s the strange card game my subconscious invented in my dream.\u00a0 Perhaps I\u2019ll put it in one of my books.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
